Lucky Craft's Wonder series, known as the "original sinking pencil," has been a staple of the sea bass scene for many years. It begins with an intuitive sense of "there's absolutely no resistance, yet somehow it catches fish," and eventually turns into the reality that it can catch fish you can't catch anywhere else. Its greatest appeal lies in the combination of simplicity—simply reeling it in—and the profound depth it offers. Even on windless nights when the water surface is completely still, the Wonder approaches fish naturally, like a weak, wobbling baitfish. ■ Basic action: Just "reel it in" Using the Wonder is very simple. Just cast it and retrieve it super slowly, at about one rotation of the reel per second. With just this, the Wonder will maintain a horizontal position and swim unsteadily just below the surface of the water, rolling slightly. It is particularly effective near the current and the boundary between light and dark. - Cast it deep into the current and reel it in slowly while maintaining line tension - If there is a clear distinction between light and dark, such as from a night light, cast it into a bright spot and continue reeling it towards the dark side Just this simple operation will attract nervous fish that won't bite with other lures. What's more, many of the hits occur in the easy-to-see range just below the surface of the water, so one of the joys of the Wonder is that you can enjoy the moment of the bite with your eyes.
■ The "flight distance" and "horizontal fall" unique to sinking pencils The Wonder is a sinking pencil with excellent flight distance. The 95mm and slim models in particular demonstrate outstanding long-distance casting performance, allowing you to target vast open waters and distant structures. Another notable feature is its unique "horizontal fall." While ordinary sinking pencils sink with a forward-leaning posture, the Wonder is characterized by its ability to sink horizontally while maintaining a natural posture by applying light line tension. The "lift and fall" that makes use of this characteristic is very effective in rivers and areas with tidal currents. Simply cast it upriver and let it ride the water current, repeating the tension fall and lift to induce a reaction bite.
■ How to choose a model and how to use it depending on the situation Wonder comes in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, allowing you to fine-tune your use depending on the situation and the fish you are targeting. Wonder 60/80: Basic models ideal for simply reeling in the surface during night fishing. Particularly effective on quiet, windless nights, they boast overwhelming catches with a slow retrieve of one rotation per second. Wonder 95: Effective in situations requiring long-distance casting or for the "falling sweetfish pattern." Simply cast up and let it ride the current as you reel in to get a reaction from big fish. Slim 70/90/110: Particularly effective at catching baitfish, whitebait, young sweetfish, and shrimp, and ideal for light patterns in night games. The slim silhouette makes them less affected by the wind and improves casting distance.
■ Compatible bait patterns and effective seasons The Wonder can be used with a variety of bait patterns, such as: Running of the yellowtail (December to June): Simply reeling in the lure is the basic technique. The Wonder Slim is particularly effective. Whitebait and young sweetfish patterns (March to June): Fine-tuning the size and reeling speed is key. Inago and sardines (May to October): Search a wide area with a 95 or 110 lure. Falling sweetfish, halfbeak and gizzard shad (September to December): A slow, horizontal fall works well. A shrimp pattern (December to June): A natural, drifting action will give them a show and get them to bite. Rockfish plugging (December to May): Simply reel in the lure slowly around streetlights.
