This tenugui is dyed using a technique where the ajiroi pattern is dyed and then the base color is layered over the entire garment. Compared to classic one-color patterns, this has a more refined and luxurious finish. The classic pattern is a stylized fishing net, but our ajiroi is characterized by its elegant color. It is said that the Kannon statue enshrined at Sensoji Temple was caught in a net spread by brothers who were fishing in the Sumida River, and so ajiroi is said to be a pattern that symbolizes Asakusa. It is one of the most representative patterns, often used on the hanten coats worn at the Sanja Matsuri festival.
This is a Tokuoka fabric made in Japan using high-quality Chita cotton.
Like traditional tenugui towels, both ends are left uncut.
It can be enjoyed as interior décor by hanging it on a hanging rod or in a frame. It is also suitable as a kendo mask towel, as it is 100cm long.
