Todaya Shoten was founded in Nihonbashi in 1872.
"Nashien Dye" is the main brand of Todaya Shoten Co., Ltd., a manufacturer and wholesaler of tenugui and yukata.
We deliver products that preserve traditional culture while creating new things, and are suited to the tastes of kabuki.
Enjoy the quality achieved through carefully selected materials and artisanal skill, and the refinement of everyday life.
Nashien Dye tenugui are almost entirely made by hand, from the stencil making to the dyeing and final folding process.
The warmth of hand-dyeing, which cannot be felt with machine production, gives Nashien Dye a deep flavor.
Nashien Dye embodies "traditional craftsmanship" and "modern Japan."
<Features>
Nashien Dye's signature technique is the "Chū-sen" dyeing method.
This dyeing method, designated a traditional craft, allows for dyeing on both sides of the fabric.
The beautiful colors and beautiful texture are only possible because it is hand-dyed by skilled artisans.
Niwazome also uses its own original fabrics and is particular about the quality of the bleached cotton used in its tenugui and yukata.
<Design>
"Traditional patterns in innovative colors, innovative motifs with traditional techniques."
This is the design concept of Niwazome.
Rather than faithfully recreating old things through nostalgia, they breathe new life into traditional designs, transforming them to suit the times.
This evolution gives rise to unique, new designs.
Niwazome also boasts an overwhelming variety of patterns that cannot be imitated.
From "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Asakusa Kinryuzan," a masterpiece from the final years of ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige's career, this piece depicts the mountain gate and five-story pagoda as seen from the Kaminarimon Gate of Sensoji Temple. The contrast between the vermilion-lacquered gate and the snow is beautifully depicted. This piece was dyed using the Hosokawa dyeing technique, which involves repeating the chusen dyeing process—its "Itaba, Konya, Mizumoto, and Date"—at least twice to complete a single pattern. This requires advanced techniques for fitting patterns and adjusting colors.
